2016 Watada Lectures to focus on sustainability and cultural transformation

Every two years since 2001 the Church of the Crossroads, a United Church of Christ Just, Peace, Open and Affirming and a Greening Congregation holds the Umematsu and Yasu Watada Lectures on Peace, Social Justice and the Environment with support from an endowment by Kathy Watada Wurfel and David Wurfel.

This year’s lectures will be presented October 13-16, 2016 in Honolulu. The theme is “Sustainability and Cultural Transformation” and the featured speaker is Erik Assadourian. Erik is a Senior Fellow at the Worldwatch Institute where he has studied cultural change, consumerism, sustainability education, economic degrowth, ecological ethics, corporate responsibility, and sustainable communities for the past 15 years.

October 13-16

On Thursday October 13 from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the UH Manoa Architecture Auditorium, Erik Assadourian will interact with a panel on the topic – “Rethinking Education for a Changing Planet.” The panel will consist of Patricia Halagao Espirito, at UHM College of Education, Buffy Cushman-Patz, UH Alum and founder of SEEQS (School for Examining Essential Questions of Sustainability) and Mathew K. Lynch, System Sustainable Coordinator for the ten UH campuses.

The Friday October 14 breakfast venue will be held in the St. Andrews Von Holt room from 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. on the topic of “Climate Change, Global Problem, Local Solutions” with a moderator and invited guests (by invitation only).

The main public event will be held on Saturday October 15 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at the Church of the Crossroads with Erik Assadourian speaking, “Is Sustainability Still Possible?”

On Sunday October 16, Erik will have a conversation on sustainability at the 9:00 a.m. Adult Education gathering and share his reflection on the Ethics and Morality of Cultural Sustainable Transformation at the 10:30 a.m. worship service at the Church of the Crossroads, 1212 University Ave.
