Character Development through Taiko Training
Tuesday, 31 July 2018 at 7:00pm
Jay Toyofuku, Pieper Toyama and Kelcie Miyakawa
People come to taiko drumming for different reasons including: physical activity, performance ambitions, fellowship and social interaction and even as a “spiritual discipline.”
Yet, every student at Pacific Buddhist Academy encounters it as a “required course, with many developing considerable skill in this traditional art. A video of a past performance at an All Believers Network event can be downloaded at: https://spaces.hightail.com/receive/Sqdl3pxTjJ
PBA taiko instructor Jay Toyofuku, former headmaster Pieper Toyama and former student Kelcie Miyakawa will share their respective experiences and insights into how taiko training has guided students beyond individuality into indispensable elements of an integrated and productive group, often providing practical lessons useful when facing the unavoidable difficulties and troubles encountered in daily life.

Ho’oku’ikahi Day, or Reconciliation Day, honors the justice, reconciliation, and nonviolence of Queen Lili’uokalani.
This year’s 26th anniversary event will be held at 7 p.m. on January 14, 2018 at Kawaiahaʻo Church, 957 Punchbowl St in Honolulu. For event details, see the related calendar item.
The day commemorates the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a 1993 public apology by the United Church of Christ to Na Kanaka Maoli at Iolani Palace and Kaumakapili Church, and a 1993 U.S. apology to Native Hawaiians made in Public Law 103-150. Ho’oku’ikahi Day has been commemorated each year since 1993. In 2014, the State Legislature established the official recognition date for Ho’oku’ikahi Day as January 17 of every year.

As America continues to struggle with the reality of becoming a nation of many faiths — as contrasted with those who believe we should be an exclusively Christian nation — it seems important that we explore ways of practicing an interfaith approach to spirituality and religion.
